WCG Historic Courthouse Historic Preservation and Addition

Project Information:
Location: Franklin, TN
Project Size: Three-stories/46,754 square feet
PRESERVATION AWARD WINNER
Project Description:
The project scope included renovation, infill and reuse of the existing, historic courthouse. The Williamson County Courthouse was originally completed in 1858 under the supervision of John W. Mille and is one of seven antebellum courthouses in Tennessee. It was used as Federal headquarters during the Civil War and served as a hospital after the Battle of Franklin. The interior was remodeled in 1937, 1964, and 1976, and the annex was added in 1976. It is one of the oldest government buildings in Middle Tennessee, is one of the prominent landmarks on the square in historic, downtown Franklin, and has been a focal point for Williamson County for many years. Because of its history and prominence, Williamson County wanted to take measures to preserve and protect this landmark as part of its recently completed renovation and additions. The program provided by the Owner included leasable office spaces that were accessible to the public on the first two floors, and secure, criminal justice spaces on the upper level. The project connected the secure, upper level of the historic courthouse to the secure judicial center, adjacent to and previously separate from the historic courthouse, via a pedestrian bridge over an existing vehicular access drive.
